Bihar Liquor Ban Reality: Border Smuggling & Police Struggle
In this exclusive ground report from the Bihar–UP border, journalist Rohit Jha investigates how alcohol continues to flow into Bihar despite the state’s strict liquor prohibition laws. Traveling across several villages and border routes, our team spoke to locals, rickshaw drivers, and police personnel stationed at the Shrikarpur Check Post in Gutri.
We observed how police use scanner machines to inspect vehicles for hidden liquor consignments. Officers explained their grueling 12-hour shifts, constant vigilance, and how fines are imposed on offenders caught smuggling alcohol. Yet, the reality is far more complex. Smugglers adapt quickly, using multiple alternative routes and even chemical tricks to disguise liquor consignments, making enforcement a daily battle.
During festive seasons, the challenge becomes even greater as the demand for alcohol rises sharply, putting enormous pressure on the system. Locals admitted that liquor remains “easily available,” despite Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s prohibition policy. This stark contrast between the law and ground reality raises questions about the effectiveness of prohibition, its enforcement, and its impact on rural communities.
With Bihar Election 2025 approaching, prohibition is set to become a central political issue. Supporters argue it has reduced domestic violence and alcohol-related crimes, while critics point to thriving black markets, police corruption, and the burden on ordinary people.
