Bihar’s Little Dreamer: 7-Year-Old Varun Works in Fields to Survive

In this heart-wrenching ground report from Dakshin Sagar Sultanpur village in Siwan, Bihar, journalist Rohit Jha of Witty Chokha captures the everyday struggle of a 7-year-old boy named Varun, whose childhood has been stolen by poverty. A Class 3 student in a government school, Varun dreams of becoming a police officer someday but instead of spending his school holidays playing or studying, he works long hours in the fields under the scorching sun to help his family survive.

For Varun and countless children like him, childhood is a luxury they cannot afford. His small hands that should be holding books now hold farming tools. Despite his age, Varun understands that every day of work means a few rupees more for his family money that buys food, not dreams.

The video exposes the harsh reality of rural Bihar, where deep-rooted poverty, lack of social welfare, and systemic neglect force children into labor. It also raises uncomfortable questions about India’s Right to Education Act and the government’s failure to ensure basic protection for its youngest citizens.
