Gopalganj Madrasa Reality: Education Crisis in Bihar

Oct 2, 2025
Bihar Election 2025

In this ground report from Gopalganj, Bihar, journalist Rohit Jha uncovers the troubling reality of madrasa education in the region. Despite students being between 18 to 21 years old, many are unable to answer even the most basic general knowledge questions. When asked about the Prime Minister of India, the Education Minister, or the Chief Minister of Bihar, most students remained silent. Others struggled to recite multiplication tables, name a single Hindi poet, or show basic literacy and numeracy skills.

While the madrasa claims to follow a full curriculum including Hindi, English, Maths, and Science, the reality tells a different story. The overwhelming focus remains on religious education, with students spending over 12 hours daily memorizing the Quran, particularly in preparation for Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan. This leaves almost no time for academic development, general awareness, or civic education.

Adding to the concern, despite being officially registered, the madrasa receives no government funding, making infrastructure and teacher training inadequate. The absence of proper monitoring and accountability has left students without the skills needed to compete in modern Bihar.

As Bihar Election 2025 approaches, the condition of madrasas in Gopalganj and across the state raises a pressing question: are political leaders serious about providing quality education to all, or will promises remain limited to speeches?

This report highlights the education crisis in Bihar, where thousands of students risk being left behind in a system that prioritizes rote learning over real knowledge and empowerment.
