Mahak Pari Arrested for Viral Reel: Is the Law Selective About Obscene Content on Social Media?

Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh: Instagram content creator Mahak Pari, known online as @mehakpari143, has been arrested by Sambhal Police after one of the reels went viral for the wrong reasons. The reel, featuring explicit language and obscene gestures, triggered outrage online and led to arrest under Section 67 of the IT Act and Section 296B of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

What Happened?

Mahak Pari, often referred to as the Reelbaaz Girl, shot to fame with bold, dramatic and double meaning reels on Instagram and Facebook. However, their latest viral video crossed the line, with vulgar expressions and profane language that many felt were unfit for a public platform. Acting upon complaints, Sambhal Police initiated legal proceedings and booked her under Section 67 of the IT Act, which deals with the publication or transmission of obscene material in electronic form, and Section 296B of BNS, recently introduced in the new criminal code for public indecency and obscene acts.

Who Is Mahak Pari?

Mahak Pari are actually two people Mahak and Pari (alias Nisha) & social media influencer and content creator known for their sharp-toned roasts, lip-syncs, and reels that often flirt with the boundaries of acceptability. They have amassed thousands of followers across platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook. Their content usually revolves around viral trends, but has often drawn criticism for being overly suggestive.

Why Just Mahak Pari? The Bigger Question

Arrest has sparked Debate: Why is the law only targeting a few creators? Across platforms like Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube, countless creators routinely post double meaning content, explicit roast videos, and even borderline pornographic clips. Yet, action is rare or inconsistent.

While some netizens have applauded the arrest as a necessary move to clean up the platform, others argue that Mahak and Pari are being made scapegoat, while more influential creators continue unchecked. The double standards are glaring: many male creators use profanity or objectify women in their content but rarely face action.

Mahak & Pari’s arrest might serve as a wake up call - but only if followed by consistent action against all violators, not selective enforcement. If the aim is to maintain digital decorum, then platforms, law enforcement, and society must hold all creators equally accountable, regardless of follower count or content category.
