Sting Bug Threatens India’s Litchi Capital | Muzaffarpur Farmers Suffer
Muzaffarpur, known as India’s Litchi Capital, is facing a major agricultural crisis this year. In this ground report, farmers reveal how a sudden Sting Bug pest attack has damaged large portions of the Shahi Litchi crop, threatening their only source of annual income. The situation has worsened due to unpredictable weather untimely rainfall, hailstorms, and rising temperatures which have reduced both fruit quality and yield.
Farmers say despite massive investment in fertilisers, pesticides, labour, and irrigation, returns are falling sharply. With poor cold storage facilities, lack of transport infrastructure, and no proper government support or crop insurance, many are at risk of financial ruin. Experts warn that if policy support and pest management training aren’t provided immediately, Muzaffarpur’s litchi industry may collapse.
